The opening "Dead Space Theme" is very discomforting and baleful. The strings and the brass do a perfect job without much beat around the bush. It feels like something jumps out of the dark in the next moment. "Welcome Aboard the U.S.G. Ishimura" starts a bit less baleful but after the half of the track it seems to throw you directly into the event from nowhere. If you listen to it for the first time it’s just an amazing moment! With "The Necromorphs Attack" there comes your first real adrenalin moment in the soundtrack. The first good placed blowoff. "Fly Me to the Aegis Seven Moon" and "Severed Limbs Are Hazardous Waste" are more or less gap fillers. After this little disillusion comes a nice goody: "Nicole's Farewell". Just listen to it yourself.

The complete middle part of the album is quite boring in comparison with the rest of the album. There’re so many adrenalin tracks (Track: 7,8,9,11,12,13,14) that your whole adrenalin and fear are gone after two or three tracks. Unfortunately they just sound too similar. So "Entering Zero-G" (in the middle of the middle part) is a welcome change. "Do Not Vomit - Do Not Shout" brings back the impressive moments you know from the beginning. "The Hive Mind" symbolizes the great blowoff of the album which unfortunately goes under because of the strong middle part you’ve heard before. The ending "Escape from the Planet of the Red" is stunning! The perfect finish for a game like Dead Space.

Game Music Hall Score: 8,6

All in all the orchestra does a pretty well job. The atmosphere is fantastic and can convince. And at some points the music absolutely scary. There’re just too much blowoffs which destroy the actual feeling Jason Graves surely wanted to reach. Bigger is not always better! If you’re searching an atmospherically and baleful soundtrack with a lot of adrenalin injections then this is yours.
